IPL & Hair Removal

Quick Links

Is a fantastic, pain free method of achieving permanent hair reduction and for reducing facial red veins, hair from almost any part of the body. In as little as 3-12 sessions you can be hair free! Facial veins will need more sessions and as they are usually caused by rosacea, will need other supportive management treatments for a better aesthetic result.

IPL hair removal is being used by millions of people around the world. Some for medical hair growth reasons and some for cosmetic hair growth reasons. Skin 1st can treat both medical and cosmetic uses.

AM I SUITABLE TO HAVE IPL HAIR REDUCTION?

Andrea does not treat, nor have anyone on the premises under the age of 18. There are very few medical conditions that prevent the treatment being given.  Conditions that prevent this treatment being given

are:

1. Being pregnant or breast feeding

2. Being tanned or sunburned (even fake tan application). Being tanned

diverts the IPL to the skin pigment rather than to the dark hair.

3. Having an infection or skin injury at the treatment site.

If you wax, pluck, epilate, thread or use hair removing cream on the IPL treatment area, you will not be able to have IPL to that area for 4 weeks. You should plan that you may need to only shave the IPL treatment site for up to 12 treatment sessions (1 year).

The best results are seen in very pale skinned clients who have dark coarse hair.

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE I BOOK MY APPOINTMENT?

You should not have the treatment repeated within 4 weeks of your previous treatment. you should shave the treatment area 1-2 days prior to your appointment and ensure you do not have any fake or real tan to the treatment site.

You should be realistic about what improvements you will achieve personally and over time considering the types of hair at the treatment site.  Make up, perfume and deodorant must be removed before your appointment as this prevents you being accidentally burned by the IPL system and allows the IPL system to make full contact with the targeted hair follicle.

WHAT IS AN IPL TREATMENT AREA?

Common areas are underarms, lip, chin, legs and bikini though almost and area can be treated, even the neck and hairline!

WHAT HAPPENS AT MY APPOINTMENT?

At your first appointment you will complete a medical questionnaire to make sure you are suitable to have this treatment, it is very important to complete this truthfully and comprehensively to ensure your safety and to obtain the best results.  This information is held confidentially in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1990.  You will have a test patch carried out on your inner arm at 3 settings to assess suitability and your skin's response.  If you have no problems with your test patch you may have your full treatment 48 hours later.

You will be given special IPL eye shields/glasses to wear during the treatment and no visitors may enter the room whilst the treatment is in progress.  You will need to undress if the treatment area is under clothing. The treatment area will be sanitised and a cool gel thinly applied.  You will then have the IPL treatment.  Some clients can feel a slight "elastic band" type stinging depending upon which area is being treated. As the hair follicle is destroyed any mild discomfort reduces. If you are having legs treated, you will be asked to turn on the treatment couch to enable us to be able to access the treatment area.

The gel is then removed from the area and your session is complete.  Andrea may discuss changing your IPL treatment settings if its deemed necessary to get you better results. No one setting works for every type of hair.

WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER MY APPOINTMENT?

This is extremely important that you follow this advice to get the best results. You may have small pink inflammed hair follicles which reduces over a couple of hours. This is completely normal and needs no treatment. You may continue shaving the treatment area if you wish to maintain an smooth result between treatments.

Wearing SPF 50 every day helps protect your skin from becoming tanned, therefore improving IPL results.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO IPL?

IPL can burn the skin if the setting is too high, which is why you must have a test patch of the settings before you embark upon a course of treatments.  There are no ingrown hairs, cuts or stubbly regrowth.

HOW LONG WILL MY IPL TREATMENT RESULTS LAST?

The average response is 6-12 months however some get much longer. Those with hair stimulating medical conditions may achieve a much less hair free time period. If you have missed monthly appointments it will take you longer to achieve hair free results as the hair follicle will not have been fully treated.

WHEN WILL I SEE MY RESULTS?

Again, everyone is different but you will usually feel the need to shave the treated area far less than usual from the first IPL treatment. We advise that you account to having the maximum amount of sessions, 12, however you may need significantly less with some treatment areas only requiring 3.  When the hair stops regrowing then we know you have achieved the desired results. If you still have hair after 12 sessions then unfortunately the remaining hair isnt suitable for IPL

treatment.

WILL ALL MY HAIR DISAPPEAR FOREVER?

Some clients' hair does go completely, but some may need other treatments to improve the hair removal process and in some cases some hair, will never be completely removed. White hair, grey hair, red hair or very fine textured dark hair cannot be picked up by the IPL light machine as the pigment is too fair to be targeted. Those untreatable hairs will need to be waxed, epilated or tweezed after the course of IPL has been completed.

A maintenance treatment is recommended every 6-12 months to maintain hair free results. clients can expect to achieve 70%-100%  hair reduction after a course of treatment.

Some medical conditions may need additional treatments as they continue to stimulate hair follicle growth. Poly cystic ovarian syndome, cushing's syndrome, and some hormone treatments can stimulate hair growth for example.

WHEN WILL I BOOK IN FOR MY NEXT TREATMENT?

The soonest you can have the next treatment is 4 weeks, to catch the hair follicle at the optimum growth cycle.  Maintenance IPL clients usually need a further treatment between 6-12  months from the original course. The online booking system is programmed to send you an email reminder at 4 weeks, Make sure we have your most up to date email address and if you haven't received your reminder email check your junk/spam folder.

HOW MANY AREAS SHOULD I HAVE TREATED?

This is a very individual preference on how you view your unwanted hair.  As the procedure is relatively painless you can have as many areas treated in one session as you wish.

Andrea will advise you at your test patch appointment if you are unsure.

IVE HEARD IPL CAN BE USED IN MANY AREAS IS THIS TRUE?

Yes, IPL can be used in almost any area of the body where there is dark hair and pale skin.  However the eye socket is not safe to treat so as not to damage the eyes.  You will need to continue to wax, thread or pluck the eyebrows because of this.  The area between the brows and above the brows is safe to treat however.
